Diamond Shapes

The shape of a diamond is one of the most distinct features, so it’s a great starting point for your search. This geometrical attribute is split into two categories: round and fancy-shaped diamonds. Round diamonds are considered more traditional, while fancy-shaped stones display a modern approach. Each has its own unique look, allowing you to select one that reflects your personality and individual style. Explore our collection of round, princess, radiant, asscher, cushion, oval, emerald, pear, marquise and heart-cut diamonds today.

The 4 C’s

Since diamonds are created naturally, every stone possesses its own unique characteristics and attributes. To grade these features, the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) uses a universal set of standards. These attributes, otherwise known as the four C’s, consist of Cut, Color, Carat and Clarity. Learn about all of the different variables below.

Cut

Cut measures the symmetry of facets of a diamond and how light shines through. To grade this feature, GIA uses a scale from Excellent to Poor. Stones that appear dull receive a Poor grade, while diamonds that are considered Excellent radiate from across the room.

Color

For this factor, GIA actually measures the absence of color. Therefore, the clearer a diamond is, the rarer therefore more valuable. Stones are graded from D to Z, where D is colorless and Z has a tint of color.

Carat

Often confused with size, carat actually refers to the weight of a diamond. This unit of measurement was originally derived from the carob seed in the 1500's. Today, a carat equals 200 milligrams which is about the weight of a paperclip. It’s normal for diamonds with the same carat to appear larger or smaller depending on the shape and cut.

Clarity

Diamonds are created under extreme heat and pressure deep below the surface of the Earth. Because of this, it’s completely normal for stones to have imperfections. These identifying characteristics are otherwise known as internal inclusions and external blemishes. The clarity scale has 11 grades from Flawless (FL) to Included (I). Included diamonds are more common and therefore less expensive.
